12047 HOW TO: Auto-run Enhanced Windows Backup (but not as a service) Author: Products: URL: /Support_Kb.aspx?kbname=auto-run-not-service Created: 11-Jul-2007 Last updated: 11-Jul-2007
We receive a lot of requests about whether Enhanced Windows Backup can be run as a service. Primarily this is because people don't want to have to login to have their system backed-up. We made a conscious decision not to implement EWBackup as a service. Service based backup applications tend to be harder to use and also can cause complex security problems e.g. people backing up other people files as a way to gain illicit access etc. Our general advice is that you can cause your system to automatically login when it boots up, thereby allowing EWBackup to launch itself. The easiest way to do this is to use Microsoft's TweakUI tools which are available for XP and 2003 Server from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx PLEASE NOTE: This can make your system vulnerable to anyone who has access to the screen and keyboard during boot up. In order to improve the security of this approach, it is best to ensure that the system automatically runs a screen saver within a couple of minutes of startup. You can do this from the Properties of the Display. Right click on the desktop, click Properties and select the "Screen Saver" tab. Select a screen saver, set a low number of minutes (e.g. 2 mins) and then tick the "on resume, password protect" tick box. Click Ok. If EWBackup is not launching itself at login, then from the File menu, select Options. Make sure that the "Launch automatically when users login" tick box is ticked.
