12018 Fault in 1st edition EWBackup 1.1.1005, "Exception occurred in Backup Engine" Author: Products: URL: /Support_Kb.aspx?kbname=error-exception-backup-engine-12018 Created: 28-Dec-2005 Last updated: 29-Dec-2005
This article relates to copies of Enhanced Windows Backup v1.1.1005 downloaded from the SoftSwift website between 23 Dec 2005 and 26 Dec 2005. This release contains a small bug which has been fixed in a new issue of v1.1.1005 which was released to the website on 26 Dec 2005. The faulty version can be identified from either the length of the downloaded setup file which was 3,389,472 bytes or from the file date of the EWBackup.exe file once installed which is 23 Dec 2005. If you are using this version of EWBackup, please download the later copy of v1.1.1005 or a later release (when available). Uninstall the faulty copy from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, then install the new copy. You will not lose any settings. The faulty copy, will crash with the error "Exception occurred in Backup Engine, which has now been stopped. Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." This message will occur as soon as the minimised Enhanced Windows Backup attempts to start a backup job. The effect of the fault is to terminate the thread which polls the list of jobs every 15 seconds to see if there is a job ready to run. Without this thread running, backup jobs will not be launched. The fault can be avoided by keeping the main window open.
